January 1, 2018
Well, here we are! The first day of the New Year! 2017, you were a good year, but I have to say I’m ready for 2018! December absolutely drained me, ya’ll! I feel worn out! Haha! I’m ready for a fresh, new year, that’s for sure!
While 2017 had some wonderful moments, I saw some hard moments too. I think that sometimes when we go through something hard, it can cloud entire months or even the whole year… it’s easy for the hard things to cloud the good parts of the year. That’s why I love reflecting on the past year. I think it is ok to acknowledge and reflect on the struggles, the challenges, but it’s important to reflect on the good things too. The accomplishments, the blessings, the exciting things, the joyful moments. Overall, I am thankful for 2017… but yes, I am happy to see it go ;-) Ready for the new!
Before I share some of my goals for 2018, I wanted to take a look back at some highlights from 2017, some of which were goals I made a year ago and since accomplished! Yesssss! I love checking goals off my list! :-D
(in no particular order)
We built not one, but TWO built-in bookshelves in our home! Building just the downstairs bookshelves was on my 2017 goal list, so it’s extra fun that we built another set! The first shelves, we completed earlier in the year. Ever since we moved into our house over 4 years ago, it’s been a dream of mine to have built-ins in our living room downstairs. They ended up being my birthday present and they couldn’t be more perfect!
We also built a built-in media cabinet/bookshelves upstairs in our TV room/den. It has brightened up that dark, gloomy room and makes the room much more functional!
I exceeded my 2017 reading goal! I made a goal to read 18 books in 2017 and, as of 3 days ago, I exceeded that goal by completing my 26th book! It has been a great reading year! Keep scrolling to find out what my 2018 reading goal is!
We traveled alot! A year full of travel is always a good year in my book! Will and I traveled to Hawaii, Charleston, Virginia Beach, and roadtripped from Vegas to Grand Teton National Park together. Hawaii and our trip out West were new locations for us, so that makes it even better! While we were in Hawaii, we rode in a helicopter for the first time and loved it! Definitely a highlight of 2017! We also got to photograph the Milky Way when we were in Utah… something that Will has always wanted to do :)
I decluttered and organized our house! This is always a highlight of my year because I LOVE decluttering and organizing! I want to do it more often. I may start my year by reading that book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Have any of you read that?
I launched my brand new website! This was such a long time goal and a time-consuming labor of love, so that made it’s completion extra exciting! Thank you to everyone who celebrated with me! It was a huge feat and I am so proud of the end result! Definitely a highlight of my year!
We photographed 2 destination weddings! Enough said! We LOVE destination weddings (and shoots!) :-D
Our friendships grew deeper and stronger. This is something that is such a blessing and such a highlight of my year. I am so thankful for the dear, dear friends God has put in our lives!
I had the pleasure of working with some charities/organizations that I have wanted to work with for years. What a blessing to be able to serve them! Truly a highlight of my year.
We got to welcome so many of our friends’/siblings’ new babies! SO many new babies in our friend groups, it’s hard to keep count. In fact, I can’t even remember how many it is because there are so many! Truly wonderful little highlights this year!
I did a photoshoot in Hawaii! This was definitely a longtime dream of mine and what a joy it was to actually have the opportunity to do a photoshoot while we were in Hawaii back in May! Simon and Ashley were delightful to photograph and I am so grateful that they asked me to take some photos for them! You can check out that photoshoot HERE!
I started creating my coaching program! My coaching program has been a dream/goal of mine in the works for about a year now. After so many photographers have asked for this over the years, I officially starting working on my coaching program this Fall and I am finishing the final touches now! Ahhh! I can’t believe it!! I am so proud of what I’ve created and I can’t wait to officially launch it and make it available to all of you — on January 15th, 2018!!! :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D
I started my Boutique Editing Services for photographers! This is another thing that has been in the works for almost a year and I got to officially announce/launch these new services back in September. I have LOVED working with my editing clients and I can’t wait to work with even more of you in 2018!
I cooked more meals at home in 2017 than ever before! Granted, I did have the help of Hello Fresh for about half of those at home meals, but I cooked at home nonetheless! I did start slacking a bit towards the end of the year through busy engagement session season and as the holidays approached. *P.S. If you click the Hello Fresh Link above, you get $40 off your first box!*
Alright… let’s move onto 2018!
I’m keeping my goals for 2018 simple. Something I learned in even more depth in 2017 is that less is more for me. That’s one thing I want to keep in mind for the coming year, as a matter of fact… less is more. Less stuff, less pressure, less time spent on things that aren’t part of my big picture, less guilt, less work, less comparison, less social media… I could go on and on. I know I’ll probably speak more on this soon, but for now, I want to put just a couple of my 2018 Goals out there…
Launch my new Coaching Program! That will actually probably be the very first goal on my list that I will accomplish and I cannot wait!!!!
Read 25 books. I hope to exceed this goal, to be honest, but I want to start with a goal I believe I can attain and we’ll go from there! If you have any must-read book recommendations for me, I’m all ears!!
Pay off our house! We’ve been budgeting and planning for this for years, so we can’t wait to finally have this big one checked off the list!!
Read the bible all the way through. I have always wanted to read through the bible in one year, but I have never done it. This year, I plan to read it all the way through! My sisters will be joining me on this journey and I am so looking forward to it! Are any of you planning to do the same thing? Leave a comment so that we can encourage and support each other!
Work out regularly. Last January, I got a gym membership for the first time since I was a teenager and I am SO glad I did! It was something I had been DYING to do for several years and it was a WONDERFUL part of my year! I have so enjoyed going to the gym each week and getting involved in pilates, yoga, and spin class. I am also going to start jogging around our neighborhood — with the puppies… they need their exercise — at least twice a week…. Baby steps ;-) It’s coooooooold right now.
Have “At Home” night each week with Will. Nights where I cook dinner, we put our phones away, and we turn the TV off. We can play games, read, talk, whatever. Just spending undistracted, uninterrupted evenings together each week. It’s a wonderful thing and I’d like to be more intentional about that in 2018.
Learn a new skill. I’m not positive what I want that skill to be, but I just know that I would like to learn something new. I have always wanted to take a cooking class. I have also always wanted to learn how to knit :) Or maybe I should learn how to juggle once and for all! Haha! You may remember this goal from last years list. Well, I didn’t learn to juggle in 2017 like I had hoped. I am about halfway to learning out to juggle and I have a bit more practice ahead of me. But I’m determined… I WILL learn how to juggle before 2019!! ;-)
Take time to reflect each month. I plan to set aside at least 1-2 days at the end of each month to reflect on the past month – what’s working and what’s not working – and to adjust accordingly. My 2018 Powersheets will help with that!
For the past few weeks, I’ve been thinking about what I want my word for 2018 to be… and I think I’ve decided on “Rest”. Rest in so many things: rest in the general sense (allowing myself to stop and breathe… take a break), but also resting in God’s timing. Resting in the fact that He is in control. Resting in His grace.
Resting instead of chasing perfection. Boy, this is a tough one! But I know I need to learn how to do that better.
I want to choose to rest when I’m worried. Rest when I’m frustrated. Rest when I don’t have all the answers. Rest when I’m tired. Just rest. And I pray for a year of rest for all of you, as well.
I pray that 2018 is filled with peace, fresh inspiration and motivation, clarity, answered prayers, stronger relationships, newfound courage, and overflowing joy. I am thankful for each and every one of you. Thank you for making 2017 a little brighter. CHEERS TO 2018!!
