We first worked with Colby from Southern Wedding Films about a year and a half ago. We instantly loved this guy and his fun personality! Since then, we’ve had the pleasure of working with him at several more weddings. He is so great to work with and produces great work! He has a way of capturing the real joy and emotion of a wedding day and he does it in a very non-invasive way. Perfect! I have been really excited about sharing this blog with you because if you don’t know how awesome Colby is or how awesome his work is yet, you will after reading this blog!
Before we get into the interview part, I wanted you to see some of his work from Trent and Hannah’s wedding that we shot together last August! Enjoy! (I borrowed this from the Southern Wedding Films site)
Now let’s Get To Know Colby from Southern Wedding Films!
–How long have you been a videographer? I was working in TV when I first picked up a video camera. That was back in 1996! I was hooked right then!
–What do you love about capturing special moments through video? Those special moments are sooo different when it’s through video! I like that a couple gets to not only see what I captured, but experience it from a different view and also see things they didn’t see or know was going on. Like a mom helping her daughter get into her dress while her favorite aunt or her sister was holding back tears right behind them. That’s the good stuff!
–In your opinion, why should someone consider hiring a professional like yourself for their videography needs? Our clients choose us not just because they love our work, they choose us because they trust us. They trust that we take their wedding day just as serious as they do. They trust that we’re prepared and dedicated from beginning to end and that we’ll be there to cover all the moments happening that day and deliver a video that ‘wows’ them!
-What are your hopes and dreams for your business in the next 5 years? We’d like to see more couples choose to have an awesome video as a part of their wedding day! And of course, choose us to be a part of it!
-How would you describe your style? Rather than point, record and put footage on a DVD, we see our role as being a storyteller! Our videos are the story of a couple’s wedding day when two families come together and it’s also the story of the transition of fiance to bride… and bride to wife! We love that!
-What is your favorite part of your job? The best part is getting that raw emotion during a wedding! It doesn’t matter who is tearing up, but seeing those tears fall always puts a big smile on my face! And then I start tearing up too and hide behind my viewfinder so no one sees me…
-If you could give one piece of advice to someone who is considering going into this business, what would it be? Only venture in with both feet into the fire if it’s something you’re passionate about. Period. If anyone looks at it as a side job or a hobby, then they are cheating themselves and the couples.
-What has been your biggest accomplishment with your business thus far? The fact that Erin Lindsey wants to profile me and put it on her blog! That’s saying something!
Chocolate or Vanilla? Vanilla… with a big helping of chocolate sauce…
Favorite Childhood Memory: Marathon sessions on the classic Nintendo playing Punch-Out, Wrestling, Super Mario Bros, Metroid and Contra. There. I just showed how old I am.
Guilty Pleasure: It’s called ‘Phish Food’ by Ben & Jerry’s… and it’s the ultimate in ice cream. I’ve been known to down a few pints of it in one sitting. It’s bad. I have a problem. Anyone who has ever had it knows exactly what I’m talking about. Anyone who hasn’t yet tried it… don’t go down this path.
Favorite Movie/TV show: TV: Dexter, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead and HIMYM. Movies: Braveheart, Pulp Fiction, Vanilla Sky and of course… Airplane!
What is your weakness (i.e. chocolate, cute puppies, etc.. haha)? I crave chocolate. Man I love that stuff. See ‘Phish Food’ reference above.
When you aren’t working, what do you love to do with your free time? I deal for casino parties from time to time. I also run about 8 miles a week and can be found at the gym 4-5 days a week. At home I can be found changing diapers and fixing a bottle in under 90 seconds when under the gun!
What makes you laugh? Anything with Leslie Nielson (like Airplane! or The Naked Gun movies) and Family Guy or 90’s Simpsons. I love slapstick comedy and not a day goes by where I don’t try to incorporate something from them into my day to day life.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live? Probably out west. I’ve always been partial to Las Vegas and the desert heat and the mountains there.
First thing you think when you wake up in the morning: It’s 7:04am. My 6 month daughter slept through the night again! WOO HOO!
If you have worked with Colby/Southern Wedding Films before, be sure to leave a comment telling us what you loved about them!
