Our Kitchen Makeover

Lifestyle, My Home, Personal

February 21, 2013

Most of you probably know how much I love reorganizing, rearranging, and redecorating my house. You also probably know that me and Will are moving out of our current/first home and building a new one! We are so excited!

We’ll be moving out in a couple of weeks and it’s kind of bitter sweet because I literally JUST finished redecorating my house. And gosh darn it, I’m not gonna leave until I’ve had a chance to show everyone the improvements I’ve made to the place :)

Last week, I blogged about Our Master Bedroom Makeover. This week, it’s my Kitchen! I’m so excited to show you my sweet little kitchen!

When me and Will first got married, I was determined to have a red kitchen. Yep. RED. Red walls. Oh my goodness. What was I thinking? Thankfully, my husband talked me out of it and we went with my second favorite color, yellow. I know, you’re probably thinking “that’s not much of an improvement from red”. And maybe you’re right. But I had a soft, airy yellow in mind. What we got was a harsh yellow. The paint swatch always looks much different than the paint on the walls. We survived with our harsh yellow walls and black furniture for about 2 or so years, but finally, enough was enough. I needed something softer….

About a year and a half ago, we painted the kitchen a softer yellow and got rid of the black. Our home used to have black in every room. Now, there is not a speck of black to be found, except for on our kitchen appliances. I wanted our home to be lighter and airier… if that’s a word.

I am excited about our NEW kitchen in the new house. It’s bigger, much more cabinet space, we’ll have a HUGE island, and best of all…. I’m getting a garbage disposal!!!! Woohooo! :-D I love my current little kitchen and I’m going to miss it. It is going to be SO hard to let it go. But, alas! I must.  I’m excited about decorating a new space :)

Here’s my kitchen makeover!

Our kitchen BEFORE. Dark, harsh, not “us” AT ALL!

And here’s our kitchen AFTER! I love it! We painted it a softer, lighter yellow and replaced the black with soft antique white. I couldn’t be more in love!

I love love love my shelves. I love them because of how they look and the purpose they serve, but even more than that, I love them because Will built them himself! It is so special to me to have things in our home that we’ve made ourselves. Unfortunately, we have to leave the shelves behind with the house (the buyer desperately wanted them), but if I can find a good wall in the new house, you better believe we will build another set of shelves! :)

I also love the wall to the left of the shelves. I had 4 frames that I bought on clearance from Target ($3 each!!!), and I knew I wanted to use them in my kitchen and I also knew that I wanted the contents to be “kitchen related”, but I didn’t know what I would put in the frames. Then one day, it hit me! I typed up some delicious recipes and printed out the photos of those recipes to put beside them. And voila! The wall was complete and only cost me about $13 altogether :) Go me!

Like the other wall, I needed something on the wall to the right of the shelves. This was easy. Julia Child quotes. Duh! I love Julia Child and loved these quotes, so of course I had to frame them!

“People who love to eat are always the best people” and “Find something you are passionate about and keep tremendously interested in it”

About a year and a half ago, me and Will spent a weekend installing our backsplash. We love it! :-D We also got granite countertops installed by one of our bride and groom‘s companies, The Stonecutter’s Guild. They did an amazing job!

There you go! Our kitchen makeover!!  I love my kitchen so so much. I will cherish these last few weeks I have with it :)  Up next for my home makeover blogs,  My Office Makeover! :)

I'd love to chat with you!

Love it. That is how we are about our furniture. It is all dark but without replacing all furniture in a room at once how do you make good transition and still have it look right in neantime

  3. Jennifer Mitchell says:

Thanks for encouragement. I sometimes get in my head it all had to be done at once but you are right not practical or easy on wallet. Love your stule

  4. Michelle Ayers says:

    I love it!

We are redoing our kitchen as it is in awful shape and we will be selling the house soon. I had been really lost on what color to pick for the walls till I saw your kitchen on pinterest. The soft yellow really fits with the calming colors we already had in the rest of the house, and yet it gives you a warm feeling as a kitchen should. Thanks for your inspiration! I really enjoyed seeing your other room makeovers as well :) You really have good taste in color and style.

  6. Chris says:

What color is the after kitchen? It’s what I’ve been looking for.
